About the Purina Awards

The Purina Top Open Dog Award is an annual award honoring North America’s top winning herding dog from trials held throughout the year. The owner of the winning dog will receive an oil painting of their dog, a cash prize of $1,000 ($2,000 if they are an active Purina Pro Club member) and a year’s supply of Pro Plan dog food for the dog. Points are awarded for the team’s top five finishes in trials during the trial season plus points based upon the team’s placing at the USBCHA National Sheepdog Finals.

The Purina Outstanding Nursery Dog Award recognizes outstanding performance in young dogs. The award will go to the high point Nursery dog throughout the qualifying season. Winners are determined by using the USBCHA tracking of points to find the highest total of “All Points” listed for the dog under the “View Details” section for each nursery dog. This includes one point for each qualification regardless of whether it was gained as a nursery or an open run. Handlers running Nursery dogs in Open Class are responsible for notifying the USBCHA Secretary of their dog’s date of birth to ensure qualification points are properly recorded. The competition will follow the annual USBCHA qualification season of August 1, through July 31.
